The topics of the workshop were “EVP” and “Afterimage”.

The radical transformation in the attitude of the spectator had already begun in the 17th century by the change of the perspective of the sight. It was caused by the invention of some optical instruments (stereoscope, zoetrope, kaleidoscope, etc.) and by further developments (laterna magica, camera obscura). The dissolution of common sight continued leading to a new way of perceiving. A new visual culture was born from modern technical instruments, technological development and from the information society, the advertisement industry and the media and entertainment industry. There are too many visual stimuli (pictures, advertisements, images, information) in our environment and the spectator is not able to take in the information any more. This critical reflection is the aim of our workshop. How can we take what is important from this mass of information? How does this process work in society? By viewing subjectively, which is the solution of choice, we form subjective knowledge. This subjective approach as process also takes place in EVP and Afterimage.

“White Noise”: Random static from a radio or television. The signal contains equal power within a fixed bandwidth at any center frequency. White noise draws its name from white light in

which the power spectral density of the light is distributed over the visible band in such a way that the eye’s three color receptors (cones) are approximately equally stimulated.

“EVP”: Electronic voice phenomena are electronically captured sounds that resemble speech, but are not the result of intentional voice recordings. Through white noise you are able to construe voices, speech and “information” as EVP. You often create a subjective sense about the “misunderstandable”. Ordinarily EVP is interpreted as supernatural phenomena.

“Afterimage”: The eye’s three color (red-blue-green) receptors (cones) are sensitive to light and react to it on different scales . There are positive and negative afterimages. The negative afterimage can be explained biologically, the positive afterimage offers an opportunity for subjective vision.

“Twilight Zone”: The title of the performance is Twilight Zone, it refers to a special state of light just before night. This phenomena is very particular, because the colors and voices of the environment change to be more pronounced (louder, more intense color, shades and shadows, etc.) for a short time before it becomes dark.
