INTERACTION BETWEEN MOVEMENT AND SOUND

by Todor Todoroff

This workshop explores how sound can be linked to movement in many contexts. Video examples of interactive dance performances, sound installations and musical performances will be given as well as hands-on demonstrations with various sensors. We review the different categories of sensors and see different techniques of sound generation, transformation and spatialisation in the Max/MSP programming environment. As each type of sensors has a different behaviour, often non-linear in regard to the position to be detected or to the force being applied, the mapping between the signals they deliver and the sound parameters they control is of great importance to the resulting sound interaction. We see how different techniques may help achieve the desired result.
